Presentation of the service

The Gerontology Department at the CHNCAK is dedicated to the comprehensive care of older adults. Its mission is to:

Prevent and treat age-related pathologies.

Maintain the autonomy of elderly patients.

Provide personalized medical, psychological, and social support.

Promote the link between care, well-being, and quality of life among seniors.

Provide an advisory role for families and caregivers.

The Gerontology Department provides comprehensive and specialized care for older adults through a structured program of outpatient consultations, assessments, and multidisciplinary follow-up.

Senior Outpatient Consultations

New Patient Consultations: Open daily (Monday to Friday)

Scheduled Appointments: Tuesday to Friday

Standardized Geriatric Assessment: Complete examination (autonomy, cognition, nutrition, etc.)

Comprehensive Care and Support

Monitoring of comorbidities related to other medical and surgical specialties.

Pre-treatment and post-treatment assessment

Pre-treatment assessment of frail elderly patients before:

Chemotherapy

Radiation therapy

Surgery

Post-treatment follow-up in case of complications

Follow-up and rehabilitation care

Post-hospitalization care to optimize functional recovery and avoid readmissions

Functional rehabilitation and support for returning home or to a suitable facility

Geriatric consultations can encompass all types of pathologies, but we specialize in the management of major geriatric syndromes, which are health problems characterized by their frequency in older adults and their complexity, with a considerable impact on their quality of life, autonomy, and mortality risk. They are the result of several factors related to aging, chronic diseases, and environmental factors.

The team behind the service

The Gerontology Department is headed by Dr. Papa Silama Fall, geriatrician. He is assisted in the care of the elderly by:

Dr Silama FALL

Service chief

Dr. Silama Fall completed his formal education in Dakar, obtaining his Baccalaureate S2 with honors at the Blaise Diagne High School. He then pursued medical studies at the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Odontostomatology of the UCAD (University of Dakar), where he earned his Doctorate of Medicine.

Before specializing, he held several positions as an acting resident, which allowed him to gain extensive clinical experience in various departments.

He then joined the National University Hospital of Fann (CHUN de Fann) for his specialization in Geriatrics and Gerontology, earning a Diploma of Specialized Studies (DES). He was part of the first class of geriatricians trained in Senegal and West Africa.
