Presentation of the service
The ophthalmology department of the Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim National Hospital Center is a medical-surgical service that treats all ocular pathologies: adnexa and the anterior and posterior segment of the eye.
Treated pathologies
The ophthalmology department receives patients from all socio-professional categories, from all backgrounds and all pathologies.
The most frequently encountered pathologies are:
In children:
· Childhood eye trauma
· Limbo conjunctivitis endemic to the tropics or LCET
· Conjunctivitis: allergic, bacterial
· Ametropia
· Amblyopia
· Strabismus
· Cataracts
· Congenital pathologies
In adults:
· Eye trauma
· Ametropia
· Glaucoma
· Chronic pathologies: hypertension, diabetes, sickle cell disease, dyslipidemia
· Cataracts
· Maculopias
The activities of the ophthalmology department are organized to effectively deal with the pathologies encountered:
· Consultations,
· Management of medical and surgical ophthalmological emergencies
· Surgeries,
· Hospitalizations,
· Support for other hospital services
Temporal organization:
· Most often patients are treated on an outpatient basis.
· Consultations are held every day of the week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
· Paraclinical examinations are carried out every Wednesday.
· Small surgeries are performed on schedule on Monday or Thursday.
· Adult surgeries are carried out in the department on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
· Infant surgeries are carried out by programming in the central operating room.
· Five hospitalization beds are open for monitoring and treatment of ophthalmological emergencies.
The average of our actions is summarized as follows for the last 12 months:
· Nearly 4,500 consultations + 500 eyeglass prescriptions
· Around a hundred ultrasounds
· A hundred visual fields

The service is equipped with a range of very modern technological equipment allowing very effective explorations and treatments:
• An ophthalmological consultation unit: Slit lamp + Tonometer / Integrated pachymetry
• An automatic refractometer + integrated keratometry
• An Octopus 600 visual field
• A mode A+ B ultrasound scanner
• An Angiograph + integrated retinography
• An operating microscope

The team behind the service
The Ophthalmology Department is headed by Dr. Dieynaba BA, specialized in ophthalmic surgery. The medical team also includes a Senior Technician in Ophthalmology (TSO) with 7 years of professional experience as a senior technician in Ophthalmology and a medical secretary.
Dr. Dieynaba Ba
Service chief
Dr. Dieynaba BA is the head of the Ophthalmology Department at the Cheikh Ahmadoul Khadim National Hospital Center in Touba. He obtained his doctorate in medicine from the University of Saint Christopher Iba Mar DIOP, Dr. Ba then specialized in ophthalmic surgery.
Only Senegalese in 2014, winner of a Sight First international scholarship, for 4 years of internship at the West African Ophthalmological Institute (IOTA) in Bamako with a view to a Specialized Studies Diploma (DES ) in ophthalmology obtained in December 2018.
